A picture of me at 20 years old standing in a rice field in the mountains near SaPa, Vietnam. Situated on the edge of a cliff, these fields belong to a family of the Hmong Tribe, an indigenous group that resides throughout South East Asia. Many still live a very simple lifestyle, sustained mostly by their land and animals. This photo was taken in 2014 during my longest period of travel, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to stay with a family that still lives this way, and it’s one of my most cherished memories. Marcos Odara dances in front of Oakland’s City Hall on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2019 to honor the many lives lost to police gun violence. During the ceremony, guns were melted down and poured into molds arranged to mimic the constellation in the sky on the night of Oscar Grant’s death. (Saskia Hatvany.)
